Mayfly Spent-Wing Material
"Neither is there a right way nor a wrong way to tie a fly---sometimes just a better way." J. Edson Leonard (Preface to his 1988 edition of Flies, 1950, A.S. Barnes and Company, Inc. NY)

| Notice the natural-looking dry flies in photos. All dry fly wings in photos were cut from Mayfly Spent-Wing Material. These dry
flies are not obscured by the numerous hackle winds needed to float conventional
dries. Mayfly Spent-Wing Material, by itself, provides unexcelled flotation
without excessive hackle winds.
It may be that a distinct outline of our dry files on the water is a
critical factor in the trout's "taking" or rejecting our imitations.
|
This is explained to us by Vincent C. Marinaro in the preface to the 1970 edition of his A Modern Dry-Fly Code (Putnam, 1950, NY): "The principal point of departure expressed by my spinner patterns is contained in the fact that they are floated by means of the body and not by means of the hackle. It has been very difficult for fishermen to accept the idea that hackle can be eliminated from a floating fly. As a matter of fact any hackle, intended as a support, presents a very distorted view of the imitation to the trout."

|
Perhaps the most extensive research and experimentation on no-hackle dry flies was that of Carl Richards and Doug Swisher, conducted on trout streams across the USA. Their work is described by Joe Brooks in Trout Fishing, Copyright 1972 by Joe Brooks, Popular Science Publishing CO., Inc., NY.
Brooks quotes Richards and Swisher as saying: "On the very small artificials the hackle obscured the outline of the wings and body and the whole fly looked unrealistic. The solution was obvious--- eliminate the hackle."
The problem, now, was how to get their no-hackle dry flies to float upright without the many hackle winds fly tyers had always used to simulate the insects' legs, and also to float and stabilize their dries. Richards and Swisher solved this problem and told Brooks that on Sept. 3, 1967 they had "released more than fifty trout between 11 A.M. and 2 P.M."
|
Brooks notes in his book "...it was the greatest fishing day in their lives." Brooks quotes Doug Swisher: "It proved our theory. Wing outline and body outline are the two most important features in a dry fly. Legs and tails are hardly noticeable. Tails are mechanically important as we found out, to position the fly in the water: But the greatest effort in fly tying should go into simulation of body and wings."

For a detailed report on their no-hackle dry flies read: Selective Trout (Copyright 1971 by Doug Swisher and Carl Richards, Lyons & Burford, Publishers, NY).
In addition to perfectly floating and stabilizing your spent-wing spinners without excessive hackle winds, Mayfly Spent-Wing Material is also realistic and easy-to-use. It can be colored on one or both sides, or left uncolored. This Material is doubled-up and glued with rubber cement (head cement will not work) to make stonefly, aquatic beetle, aquatic bug, and jassid (leafhopper) wings. For other dry flies--- including spent-wing spinners, caddisflies, up-wing emergers, duns and ovipositing females it is used single thickness.
Mayfly Spent Wing Material is only $5.00 for 66 sq. in., or $9.95 for 264 sq. in. With the $9.95 (264 sq. in.) package of Mayfly Spent Wing Material cost of tying medium size (20mm - 24mm) spent wings is about three cents; cost of tying small (14mm - 18mm) spent wings is about two cents; and cost of tying very small (8mm - 12mm) spent wings is less than one cent.
